Witcher 4 Monster Contracts Guide 2026: Every Contract Location, Best Rewards & Optimal Hunt Order
The first monster contract I took in Witcher 4 was the Leshen in the Kovir forest. It killed me seven times at level 4 before I realized the contract was meant for level 12. The game doesn't level-gate contracts — it trusts you to figure out when something is too strong. Here's every contract, when to do them, and what rewards you should prioritize.
How contracts work in Witcher 4 (what changed from Witcher 3)
Contracts are still posted on notice boards in villages and towns, but the system has three notable changes from Witcher 3. First, contracts now have variable rewards based on how you complete them. Kill the monster quickly and you get the base pay. Track it, study its lair, and exploit its specific weakness (the "Witcher's Way") and you get a bonus — usually 50% more gold plus a unique crafting component.
Second, trophies now provide active bonuses instead of passive stat increases. The Leshen trophy gives a 5% chance for plants to yield double ingredients, which sounds minor but saves hours of herb farming. The Wyvern trophy gives 10% mounted speed, which is noticeable in Kovir's large open zones.
Third, contracts now have consequences. If you leave the Griffin of Northmarch contract for too long (more than 10 in-game days after accepting it), the griffin attacks a village and the contract reward decreases because the village has less money to pay you. Some contracts also have witnesses who testify about how you handled the monster — these testimonies affect your reputation in the region.
Contract board locations and when to visit them
Kovir City (Central Square): The main hub. 6 contracts available, levels 4 to 22. Visit as soon as you arrive in Kovir. Take the Drowner contract (level 4) immediately — it's a tutorial contract that teaches the new investigation mechanics.
Pontar Valley villages (3 boards): 8 contracts total, levels 6 to 30. The level 6 Forktail contract is the best early-game gold source. It pays 250 crowns base + 125 bonus for exploiting fire weakness with Dancing Star bombs.
Dragon Mountains settlements (2 boards): 5 contracts, levels 18 to 40. Endgame contracts. The Archgriffin contract (level 35) is the hardest monster fight in the base game and drops a mutagen used in the best alchemy build.
Skellige-inspired western isles (1 board): 3 contracts, levels 14 to 28. These are optional but the Siren contract (level 14) gives a trophy with underwater breathing, which is useful for the flooded ruins side content.
Recommended contract order by level
Levels 4-8: Drowner (Kovir City, tutorial) → Nekker Nest (Pontar Valley, level 5) → Forktail (Pontar Valley, level 6) → Foglet (Kovir City, level 8). These four give you enough gold to craft your first Witcher school gear set.
Levels 9-14: Werewolf of Hengfors (Kovir City, level 10) → Basilisk (Pontar Valley, level 12) → Siren (Western Isles, level 14). The Werewolf contract teaches you how to use Ciri's new chain abilities to lock down fast-regenerating enemies.
Levels 15-22: Leshen (Kovir City outskirts, level 18) → Fiend (Pontar Valley, level 20) → Golem (Kovir City, level 22). The Leshen contract is the first "real" boss fight. Preparations matter here — if you don't have Relict Oil and Moon Dust bombs, you will die.
Levels 23-35: Wyvern (Pontar Valley, level 25) → Arachas (Dragon Mountains, level 28) → Cyclops (Dragon Mountains, level 32) → Archgriffin (Dragon Mountains, level 35).
Best contracts for early-game gold
Forktail (level 6): 375 crowns total with bonus. Takes about 8 minutes. The craftable component reward is a Forktail Spinal Fluid, which upgrades the Griffin School silver sword to Enhanced level without needing a diagram.
Werewolf (level 10): 500 crowns total. The werewolf also drops Werewolf Hide, which sells for 150 crowns to armorers. Total effective value: 650 crowns for 10 minutes of work.
Leshen (level 18): 800 crowns total with bonus. The Leshen drops a Leshen Resin needed for the Superior Relict Oil recipe. Don't sell it.
The Witcher's Way bonus — how to trigger it every time
Every contract has a hidden "Witcher's Way" condition that gives the bonus reward. They follow patterns:
- Necrophages (Drowners, Rotfiends, etc.): Use the correct oil AND kill at least 3 with bombs. Necrophage Oil + Grapeshot bombs always triggers the bonus.
- Vampires: Use Black Blood potion AND Moon Dust bomb. Black Blood damages the vampire when they bite you, and Moon Dust prevents regeneration. Both conditions must be met.
- Cursed Ones (Werewolves, Berserkers): Use Cursed Oil AND cast Yrden or Axii during the fight. Cursed creatures are vulnerable to mind control.
- Draconids (Wyverns, Basilisks, Forktails): Use Draconid Oil AND a crossbow bolt to the wing (knocks them out of the air). Grapeshot also works for the bomb condition.
- Specters (Wraiths, Foglets, Noonwraiths): Use Specter Oil AND Moon Dust bomb AND cast Yrden. Specters have three conditions instead of two, but they're all easy to hit.
- Ogroids (Trolls, Cyclops, Golems): Use Ogroid Oil AND land a charged heavy attack from behind. The back-hit charged attack is the tricky part — use Samum bomb to blind them first.
- Relicts (Leshens, Fiends, Chorts): Use Relict Oil AND burn the enemy with Igni at least once AND don't use Quen during the fight. The no-Quen condition is the hard part. Relict damage is slow and telegraphed, so you can dodge instead of shielding.
Trophy bonuses — which ones are actually useful
Equip trophies at the inventory screen by slotting them into the trophy hook. You can only have one active. The best trophies by category:
Combat: Archgriffin (10% attack power against large enemies — bosses and big monsters), Leshen (5% lifesteal on strong attacks)
Exploration: Griffin of Northmarch (10% mounted speed), Siren (unlimited underwater breath)
Crafting/Gold: Leshen (5% double herbs), Fiend (10% discount at all merchants in the region where you killed it)
The Fiend trophy's discount applies retroactively to existing merchants. Fast travel to the richest armorer in Kovir City after equipping it and the discount activates. This saves thousands of crowns on crafting materials.
Contracts you can fail (and how to avoid it)
Some contracts have hidden failure conditions. The Doppler contract in Kovir City fails if you use Axii during dialogue. The Doppler respects mind manipulation and refuses to pay. Beat it in combat without dialogue Axii.
The Succubus contract in Pontar Valley fails if you kill her. She's not actually hostile — she's being framed. Investigate the scene fully (use Witcher Senses on the claw marks, then on the perfume bottle, then talk to the victim's husband) to reveal the true culprit.
The Dragon of Kovir contract doesn't fail but the reward changes. If you kill the dragon, you get the standard contract reward. If you spare it (requires a difficult Axii dialogue check at level 3), you get a unique silver sword diagram instead. The sword is worse than crafted Witcher gear by the time you can use it, but it's the only dragon-themed silver sword in the game.
