Witcher 4 Hidden Items Guide: Every Missable Weapon, Armor Set, and Collectible
I missed the Superior Swallow recipe on my first playthrough. Know why? I didn't do the alchemist's apprentice quests before a certain story point. After that point, the quest giver was gone. Permanently. No way to get the recipe.
That's the kind of thing this guide is for. Witcher 4 has a surprising number of permanently missable items, and some of them are build-defining. Here's everything worth tracking down, organized by region.
Valdrest (Act I)
Permanently Missable
The silver sword from the crane merchant stops being available after you enter Lan Exeter. Not missable in the sense that the merchant dies. The merchant just stops selling weapons after Act I for story reasons. If you want that early silver sword upgrade, buy it before leaving Valdrest. Simple as that.
The Sea Wraith dagger from the docks fistfighting champion is available until you enter Lan Exeter's upper district. After that, the fighting ring disbands. The dagger applies bleed and it's the only weapon in the game with the sea-touched property. Bonus damage to drowners and sirens. Very useful for the first two acts.
Collectibles
All three Valdrest Gwent cards are available from the start. The innkeep sells the Lynx Scout. The blacksmith sells the Mahakaman Defender. The harbormaster gives you the Kovir Trader card after you solve the missing shipment mystery. The harbormaster card is the only one with a timer. If you don't talk to him before completing your third contract, he won't offer it. I missed it.
There's a diagram for the Griffin School gauntlets in a chest beneath the Valdrest lighthouse. Accessible after the lighthouse keeper quest, which triggers at night during a storm. Check my secret locations guide for exact timing.
Lan Exeter (Act II)
Weapons
The Bear School silver sword diagram drops from Mad Kiyan, the rival witcher. If you befriend him instead of fighting, he gives you the diagram anyway during the farewell dialogue. The only way to permanently miss this is to ignore his questline entirely. Don't do that.
The Mahakaman rune sword from the dwarf blacksmith in the trade quarter requires completing two of his three fetch quests. The quests are: bring him meteorite ore from the northern caves, bring him a specific gem bought from the gnome quarter merchant, or bring him a monster trophy, any contract trophy works. The gem quest is the cheapest. 500 coin from the gnome quarter. The sword carries most builds from level 5 into the teens.
Armor Diagrams
Griffin School full set, medium armor with Sign intensity, comes from these locations: chest in hidden chamber beneath the scholar district library, accessible during the mage's quest. Gauntlets from Valdrest lighthouse chest. Trousers from theater quest reward. Boots from northern farmlands, in a cave behind the mill waterfall.
Cat School set, light armor with stamina regen, pieces are scattered across Lan Exeter's upper district rooftops. You need the Elder Blood blink-dash range upgrade to reach some of them. Or a lot of patience with the parkour system. I used the parkour method. It took forever.
Lynx School set, medium and balanced, is quest-locked. You get the diagrams through the main story and can't miss them. But the upgrade tiers require finding specific crafting materials in optional locations. Those you can miss.
Gwent Cards
The Lan Exeter tournament, held at the inn in the canal district, runs during Act II only. Rewards the Ciri hero card: Lynx School Witcher, 12 strength, scorch. Win all three tournament matches to get it.
Unique cards from side content: the theater quest gives a Vampire card, 8 strength with muster. The gnome quarter hidden underground gives Gnome Engineer, 8 strength with tight bond. The alchemist's apprentice chain rewards a Mage card, 10 strength, hero, immune to weather. Complete all six fetch quests to get it.
Alchemy Recipes
Superior Swallow is locked behind the alchemist's apprentice quest chain. Six small fetch quests: herbs, monster parts, a specific mineral. Spread across the canal district. Complete them all before finishing the Act II main story or the quest giver disappears. Can't stress this enough.
Superior Petri's Philter is in the alchemist's cellar, hidden door in the canal district, no quest marker.
Golden Oriole formula from the canal district alchemy vendor. Price goes up as you progress. Buy it on your first visit. Future you will thank past you.
Northern Territories (Act III)
Treasure Hunt Swords
Tidebreaker, relic steel sword with plus 20% damage against enemies in water, from the third pirate cache on the western coastline.
Frostbite, relic silver sword that applies freeze on heavy attacks, from the frozen shipwreck at the northernmost point. Requires tier-2 Igni to melt the ice door.
Endgame Armor
Bear School full set, heavy armor with damage reduction, comes from: chest from Mad Kiyan loot or friendship reward. Gauntlets from frozen shipwreck. Trousers from fiend cave, Act III mountain caves, in a side chamber. Boots from northern mountain shrine, unmarked, look for stone circles.
The four-piece Bear set bonus, damage reduction scales with toxicity level, is the strongest defensive bonus in the game. Essential for Death March alchemy builds.
Legendary Diagrams (NG+)
Each Witcher School set has a Legendary version in NG+. The Legendary diagrams are found in the same locations as the base versions, but the chests respawn with the upgraded diagrams. The stats are about 40% higher and each piece gets an extra Glyph slot.
Missable Contract Rewards
The northern farmlands have a contract board with three contracts. Two are permanent. The third, a noonwraith variant in the eastern fields, expires if you complete the main story's Act III finale before taking it. The reward is a unique silver sword coating that adds 5% critical hit chance permanently to any silver weapon. It's an item, not a skill, so it carries between swords. Very worth doing before the Act III boss rush.
Universal Missables
Gwent cards tied to characters who can die or leave based on story choices are the most common missable category. The rule of thumb: play every named NPC at Gwent the first time you meet them. Don't assume you'll get another chance. You won't.
Crafting materials from specific monsters are technically farmable, monsters respawn, but tedious. Drowner brain tissue, wyvern scales, and fiend eyes are the three you'll need in the largest quantities. Stockpile them whenever you're in the relevant areas.
The Winter Myrtle herb, used for the respec potion, only grows in the northern mountain pass during act III. There are exactly seven plants in the game. Six are enough for two respecs. If you use both, you're locked into whatever build you land on. Choose carefully.
And the most easily missed thing of all: the School of the Lynx origin journal. It's under the Valdrest notice board, only accessible after completing all Valdrest contracts. No quest marker, no hint, no reward beyond lore. But it's one of the best-written documents in the game and directly explains why the Lynx School exists. If you care about the story, don't miss it.
I found it on my second playthrough. Wished I'd found it on my first.
